Henry Sanchez Honored for 65 Years of Service to Society
A highly decorated U.S. Navy sailor, Henry Sanchez went on to earn multiple awards for his contributions to civic endeavors
BAYONNE, NJ, September 12, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Henry Sanchez, President of Bayonne Community Museum, Inc., has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in public service.
A devoted public servant Mr. Sanchez has spent 65 years in various civic and government organizations. Today he celebrates his ninth year at the helm in the development of the Bayonne Community Museum, which will house City of Bayonne, New Jersey historical memorabilia in the classic beaux-arts building originally constructed in 1912 by the Bayonne Trust Company. Mr. Sanchez is entrusted with leading the refurbishing project to restore the nearly 100 year old structure to its original state. He works closely with the Bayonne Historical Society to ensure that the building retains its historical authenticity throughout. In addition to overseeing this project, he serves as chairman of grants, which holds him responsible for any fundraising activities.
Prior to his involvement with the Bayonne Community Museum, Mr. Sanchez worked for the federal government for fifty one years, which includes two years, two months and seven days during World War 11 with the U.S. Navy Amphibious Forces as a signalman. A participant in the D-Day invasion in Normandy, France, he was honored with the Combat Action ribbon for service in Europe, Pacific and Asia, and with commendations from former New York Governor George Pataki and former U.S. Secretary of Defense William S. Perry, to name only a few of his citations. Mr. Sanchez' later jobs included establishing a Red Cross Blood bank in 1956 and serving as a federal firefighter for seven years. He continued his involvement in emergency response services through the American Red Cross in Bayonne where he occupied the position of disaster chairman.
Mr. Sanchez is a life member of the following veterans posts, Past Commander of the F. A. Mackenzie Post 165 American Legion in Hudson County, State of New Jersey, Past Hudson County Executive Committeeman of the American Legion, Past Commander of Disabled American Veterans, Chapter # 5, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 226, Korean War Veterans of Hudson County, American Veterans Post # 33, Catholic War Veterans, Assumption Post 1612, Trustee of the Concerned Citizens of Bayonne, N.J., Past Chairman of the United Way of Hudson County and member of the Board of Directors and a member of the American Conference on Diversity.
Almost as distinguished as a civilian as he was a sailor, Mr. Sanchez was recognized by the Bayonne Historical Society with a Lifetime Achievement Award, by Hudson County with the Christopher Columbus Award for outstanding community service, and by the State of New Jersey with a Senate and General Assembly Citation. In January 1997, he received a congressional record citation for 51 years of federal service from Congressman Robert E. Menendez. On September 27, 2005, House of Representative Robert E. Menendez read into the congressional record, "Mr. Sanchez is being honored with the Louis T. Scialli Memorial Award sponsored by the United Way of Hudson County. This award recognizes men of Hudson County who have demonstrated an extraordinary sense of community spirit."
